Tom Hare
1932—2005
By Fred Lewis, Nightcap baritone
T om Hare passed away on Thursday, May 25, 2005 at the Toronto East General Hospital. A Funeral Service was held on May 30 at the Sherrin Funeral Home on Kingston Road, lead by Rev. Nico VandrStoel, Minister of Riverdale United Church and a former member of the East York Barbershoppers.
Upwards of 60 Barbershoppers attended the funeral, representing the East York Chapter, the Suburbanaires, the Tri-City Gospel Chorus and the Ontario District, in all of which Tom was an active member. The combined chorus sang: “Let There Be Peace On Earth,” “I Believe” and “The Irish Blessing.” Tom was also a faithful bass in the Riverdale United Church Choir. Singing was his passion!
Tom was a long-time member of the East York Chapter and served in many capacities including president, secretary, quartet program and numerous committees including chair of Singing Valentines. But Tom got the most satisfaction and pride from his quartet, Nightcap that he started 15 years ago and his work as editor and publisher of the East York’s Harmony Holler.
Tom’s battle with cancer was made more difficult over Christmas with the loss of his lovely wife, Mary, and brother Ken. He leaves his daughter, Laura and her husband, Scott and granddaughter Jocelyn. Also a brother Norm and wife Jane, sister Mary-Lou and sister-in-law Debbie. k
