Anniversaries

Editorial By Waldo A. Redekop, Editor/Publisher The Trillium

As this year began and I became aware of the fact that it was the sixtieth anniversary (1946) of the Ontario District and the fiftieth anniversary (1956) of the official Ontario District newsletter, the first one being titled North’n Hi-Lights (the predecessor of The Trillium), I began to wonder what other events took place in years ending in a six.

As you will have seen from the last issue, this is the twentieth anniversary (1986) of Harmony College North. That takes place the weekend of June 2-4, 2006, at the University of Guelph, hosted by the Guelph Chapter.

It also is the twentieth anniversary (1986) of the Pep Rally which takes place on June 20 in the usual location in Mississauga, hosted by APOC, which is the Association of Past Ontario Champions.

Another anniversary this year is the fiftieth anniversary (1956) of Joe Barbershopper. That was developed from a contest that the Society ran to try and find a caricature that would exemplify barbershopping. Greg Backwell from the Ontario District entered five images of what is now known as Joe Barbershopper and won the event.

Greg sent me a coloured page commemorating this winning when I was into my second year as editor of The Trillium. Unfortunately the gold printing does not show in this scan. Greg also redesigned the nameplate and coming events on the front and back covers of The Trillium for me (at no cost to the district) which I started using as soon as I received it, the fourth issue of 1994, and have proudly used it ever since.

On a personal note, I just recently received notice of my fifty year (1956) reunion of my graduating class from high school. Of course I plan to attend.

This year Donna and I celebrate our fortieth (1966) wedding anniversary.

It also is the fortieth anniversary (1966) of me joining another organization to which I still belong.

This happens to be the thirtieth anniversary (1976) of me joining the Barbershop Harmony Society.

It is the tenth anniversary (1996) of me becoming president of PROBE (Association of Public Relations Officers and Bulletin Editors) which I did for three years.

Years ending in six aren’t that significant and not much of the above is likely of great importance to most of you. However, I include an editorial in each issue and this filled the space. Enjoy the summer. We sure will!     k
