Ross Sutherland honoured this summer
By Waldo Redekop, Editor/Publisher The Trillium
Ross Sutherland, founder of the Suburbanaires in 1990 and founder of the Markham Chapter, was awarded the Mayor’s Seniors’ Hall of Fame award on June 13, 2006, at a ceremony in the Civic Centre of Markham. Ross previously won the Meritorious Award in 1969.
Those of you who know Ross, know that he has been a tireless worker in many fields over the years. The 2006 Hall of Fame award went to Ross for his charity and community service work over the years due to his love of music.
Ross has produced barbershop and Variety fundraising shows over the years for Participation House, Unionville Home Society and Markhaven Home for Seniors’ Building Fund and many others.
Ross is a director of Markham Historical Society, chair of the St. Andrew’s Garden Club, founder of the Markham Arts Council, member of the Markham 2000 Committee, the official archivist for the Markham Theatre and currently on the Gala Committee for the Arts Council.
This award is just an addition to the many awards that Ross has so deservedly earned, among which are Barbershopper of the Year, Barbershopper of Renown (1991), Meritorious Ontario District Service award and the Canadian Confederation Commemorative Medal awarded by the Government of Ontario.
No wonder the Markham Arts Council also honoured Ross in recognizing all his hard work by designating Ross Sutherland as the 2006 Senior of the Year.
CONGRATULATIONS Ross!
Well deserved awards!
