Long Live “Uncle” Lloyd

By Darryl Flinn

When I heard Judy Steinkamp‘s voice on the phone this morning, my heart stopped for a moment. We knew that Lloyd had been fighting an immense battle with lung cancer. Lloyd died at 6:40 this morning. He had been in the care of San Diego Hospice for just a few days.

Judy tells us that Lloyd passed peacefully and that he handled his last days with humor and dignity. She wanted to get these details to us today.

There will be a memorial service celebrating Lloyd’s life and times on January 13, 2007 at 1 p.m.. Lloyd Steinkamp was affectionately known as “Uncle Lloyd” for his great interest in, and tremendous success with, the Youth In Harmony program in the Far Western District.  In lieu of flowers. memorial gifts may be given through the church.  It is Judy and Lloyd’s wish that a Youth In Harmony Scholarship be the result of our gifts. Those details will be handled by Harmony Foundation.

Lloyd was everything possible to his beloved Society. He gave as a quartetter, a chorus director, a judge, a coach, an arranger, a teacher, a writer, an emcee, a COTS instructor, a Society employee (starting up literally hundreds of chapters throughout North America), as an effective leader and an administrator. Lloyd was also well known for his gifts to our worldwide affiliates. More than all of that, Lloyd was generous with his thousands of friends whom he loved mightily — and often said so.

The memories of this magnificent man, beloved friend and extraordinary Barbershopper will live forever.     k
