Roy Johnson

1922—2007

By George Nicholson, St. Catharines Chapter member

There’s another tenor in the Chapter Eternal chorus, with the passing of Roy Johnson, a 38-year Society member, from the St. Catharines Singing Saints in January, 2007.

Roy was born in Niagara Falls, Ontario, but as a youth, moved with his family to Niagara Falls, New York. He served in the United States army during World War II, after which he started Roy’s Radiator Co. In October, 1947.

Barbershop Harmony singing began for Roy with the Niagara Falls, New York chapter. After its demise, Roy transferred to the St. Catharines Chapter, commuting across the U.S./Canada border with fellow U.S. Barbershoppers as they became Singing Saints.

As a tenor, Roy’s voice was prominent in the chorus and in the quartets he enjoyed singing with. The Lock Four quartet was a special one that made many appearances promoting barbershop harmony and fund raising for Harmonize For Speech.

Roy was very active in the chapter with his support for the annual show, Singing Valentines and the chorus performances, as well as a member of the music team.

Besides his singing, he enjoyed woodworking, antique tractors, boating and was past commodore of the Niagara River Yacht Club.

A tip of the ‘Halo’ to Roy from the Saints for his contributions to the chapter as he enjoyed barbershop harmony.
