On Wednesday, February 14, 2007, at their regular rehearsal, members of the Barrie Chapter paid special tribute to Roy Keys who had celebrated his 90th birthday just five days earlier. On display at the entrance to the hall was a large poster depicting the many highlights of Roy’s distinguished career over the years as director, coach, arranger and administrator.

As the evening progressed, Roy directed the chorus in a number of songs including his own arrangement of “Happy Birthday” which he directed with a huge smile and his usual enthusiasm.

A well-decorated birthday cake was served during coffee break with Roy making a wish before the first slice was served.

At the conclusion of the evening, Ted McAlpine presented Roy with an album, the cover of which was a large birthday card signed by everyone in attendance. The album would be a record of the evening’s activities containing pictures taken during the festivities by Steve Volkmann and well wishes from many, including dignitaries from both the Ontario District and the Barbershop Harmony Society.

Once the contents were assembled, Ted re-presented the finalized tribute album to Roy at the meeting on February 21.

It was indeed a wonderful evening of celebration for a wonderful man, Roy Keys.         k
