Doug Durant
1930—2007

By Bob Walker

Doug Durant joined the Society in 1960. He became a member of the Association of Past Ontario Champions (APOC) as tenor of the Sound Proposition quartet, Ontario District champions in 1972 and International representatives to the Society’s International Quartet Competition held in Kansas City in 1974.

In 1975 we began travelling the Show Circuit, and performed several shows a year around the eastern half of the continent until we officially retired in 1991. Ottawa, Illinois; Chicago, Illinois; Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; Coral Gables, Florida; Presqu’ile, Maine and Moncton, New Brunswick were some of our distant appearances.

We flew our own light plane (Cessna182) to a lot of shows. We flew commercial airline to quite a few also.

As a comedy quartet we had a “prop bag.” In it we had a couple of guns—a starter’s pistol and a very realistic looking BB 9 mm pistol. We had a lot of fun getting that stuff through security when we flew commercial! It helped that our lead, Elmer, was a member of the RCMP!

Sixteen years on the road doing shows, we have a lot of stories to tell. Doug used to tell most of them! This longevity and popularity of Sound Proposition was due to our comedy package of songs, in which Doug was the funnyman.

Another of our memorable appearances was on the 1986 Scarborough Chapter Dukes of Harmony show at Roy Thompson Hall, sandwiched between the Dukes and the Vocal Majority! Great fun! k
